Sparks, MD - JMT and our joint venture partner were awarded the Grand Prize for Planning by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers in its national Excellence in Environmental Engineering competition. In a ceremony held on May 3, 2006, our team was honored for the Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) project for the City of Baltimore's Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant. We completed a comprehensive process evaluation for the treatment plant, including a one-year pilot testing program, and prepared preliminary designs for upgraded facilities at the plant to remove nitrogen and phosphorus from wastewater. The ENR project, which uses a Biological Aeration Filter (BAF) process, will make a significant positive impact on the health of the Chesapeake Bay while meeting new nutrient discharge reduction goals. Only one other U.S. plant similar in size to Patapsco has implemented this type of advanced nutrient removal system. The American Academy of Environmental Engineers is a specialty certification board and professional society for environmental engineers that is dedicated to improving the quality of environmental engineering practice. Headquartered in Annapolis, Maryland, it certifies environmental engineers of proven quality from around the world in one or more of seven specialities of environmental engineering practice. The Academy's program, accredited by the Council of Engineering and Scientific Specialty Boards, has existed since 1955. The Academy also provides leadership in the accreditation of environmental engineering curricula, and the dissemination of technical and professional information to the public and the profession.
