| PENNDOT selected JMT to perform the preliminary engineering, environmental studies, final design and construction consultation services for the replacement of the existing Gay Street Bridge. The existing concrete arch structure, built in 1924, is a 12-span structure with eight open spandrel concrete arches and four reinforced concrete T-beam approach spans. The bridge carries both vehicular and pedestrian traffic over French Creek, two streets, Norfolk Southern Railway, the old Phoenix Iron Works and the proposed French Creek Parkway. Some of the unique elements of work associated with this task were: The existing structure is a contributing element to the Phoenixville Historic District. JMT worked with the community and Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC) to provide a context sensitive design. JMT formed a Citizen and Business Advisory Committee (CAC) to obtain community input throughout the project development process. The CAC was made up of residents, community leaders, local business owners and public officials. JMT produced photographic renderings of possible alternatives for the public to view and comment on during the public meeting. With continuing input from the PHMC and CAC, JMT developed final design plans for an aesthetically pleasing and historically satisfying structure.
