Federal and state standards have tightened for the treatment of nitrogen and phosphorus in wastewater as technological advancements have improved treatment plants' capabilities to remove these nutrients. JMT recently completed work on the final phases of a process evaluation/design project for Enhanced Nutrient Removal (ENR) for the City of Baltimore’s Patapsco Wastewater Treatment Plant, an 87.5 MGD facility that handles approximately one-fourth of the region's wastewater. This project included the preliminary study and 30% level design of ENR upgrades, with these key features:
Design limits: lower total nitrogen to an annual average level of 3.0 mg/L and total phosphorus to 0.3 mg/L
ENR processes evaluated: Modified 2-stage process and BAFF process
Environmental site assessments
Plant influent testing and characterization
Detailed process modeling
Pilot testing
Construction cost evaluation
Operations & Maintenance cost evaluation
