The Baltimore region is currently served by a combination of public transportation options including buses, light rail, and heavy rail. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is reviewing several opportunities for system expansion. JMT is analyzing the feasibility of the Red Line, a new transit line that is considered to be among the region’s highest priorities to reduce roadway congestion. The proposed Red Line corridor extends approximately ten miles within Baltimore City and Baltimore County, from west of the Beltway (I-695) through downtown Baltimore’s central business district (CBD).
Connections to other transit system resources are vital to the Red Line’s viability. The study considers crossings involving three existing fixed-rail transit services, including:
MARC for commuting between Baltimore and Washington, DC
Baltimore Metro heavy rail line between the northwest suburbs through the CBD to Johns Hopkins University
Central Light Rail line between the northern suburbs through the CBD to BWI Airport
JMT and our joint venture partners are investigating light rail, heavy rail, and bus rapid transit alternatives along both fully and partially dedicated right-of-way as we proceed with the study. Our findings and recommendations may have substantial impacts on the Baltimore region’s transportation future.
