JMT provided the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) with design services for the rehabilitation of two independent bridge structures carrying SR 0081 over Swatara Creek. PennDOT originally intended for complete deck replacements, select framing repairs, and a complete repainting of the structural steel. JMT determined that it was possible to replace the entire superstructure framing system with new weathering steel girders for less cost than it would take to clean, paint, and repair the existing superstructure. The new superstructure design also allowed for a slightly wider bridge deck.
Unique solutions were developed by JMT to address the project's challenges. Among the highlights:
Nine pier caps, two pier columns, and all four abutments were replaced in order to meet the new Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) code.
JMT coordinated with archaeologists, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), and other agencies to mitigate disruptions to a local fossil exploration site as well as the Appalachian Trail and a DCNR trail under the bridges.
