A key aspect to the successful implementation of any transportation project is to garner public understanding and support. JMT personnel have extensive experience at developing consensus through a variety of public participation techniques such as public meetings, hearings and open-house presentations; design charettes and workshops; community visioning workshops; visual preference surveys; study and steering committee meetings; individual and group interviews; and citizen and agency surveys.
JMT staff members engage the public in active participation for the purpose of community goal setting, consensus building, problem identification, strategy development and alternative analysis. These techniques have been applied to planning activities such as the development of comprehensive and master plans, strategic plans, site feasibility studies, park and greenway master plans, bikeway and pedestrian master plans and park and recreation facility master site plans.
Visualization of projects, when used to communicate the intent of proposed improvements, is an extremely effective consensus-building tool. JMT applies traditional graphical elements such as hand-drawn renderings as well as digital age products like computer enhancements and animations that are developed as appropriate for the type of information to be conveyed. Through the use of these resources, we can demonstrate not only the “before” and “after”, but even the sequence in which improvements will be implemented and their impacts. We develop brochures, flyers, newsletters, and other print media, as well as websites, multimedia presentations, and computer-based project drive-throughs, fly-overs, and dynamic rotational views that enhance project understanding and decisionmaking.
